Advertising can be defined as the transfer of non-personal information about products (goods & services) or ideas that are usually paid and persuasive in nature, by an identified sponsor via media sources. Types of Advertising The various mediums through which all the above mentioned targets can be achieved are now defined below: Print Advertising �Brochures, Magazines, Fliers, Newspapers, The print media is one of the oldest and perhaps the most commonly used medium of advertising. The basic ways to advertise through print media is the newspapers and magazines. These two mediums often sell advertisement space on the basis of the area occupied by it, the appearance or position of the advertisement i.e., front page or the middle page, along with the viewership of the publication. In addition to these methods, the print media also offers promotional fliers and brochures for the purpose of advertisement. Outdoor Advertising � Billboards, Tradeshows, Kiosks and Events The techniques of outdoor advertising include the use of Billboards and Kiosks. Advertising through Billboards can be a tough job as it should be very attractive and catchy in order to grab the consumer�s attention. The Kiosk not only provides an outlet to the company products, but is also an effective means to promote the features of the company�s product. In addition to these ways, organizing of tradeshows and events also counts as an effective advertising tool. This can be done by organizing trade fairs and exhibitions or to organize any event that is related to the product. For example, any sports brand may organize a sports event to promote it s sports utilities. Broadcast advertising � Television, Radio and the Internet Broadcast advertising is considered as one of the most effective means of advertisement. It includes advertising via television, Internet or radio. The cost of television advertisement is based on the duration of the advertisement, the popularity of the channel on which the add os being broadcasted and the timinng on which it is being broadcasted i.e, (peak hours/prime hours). Advertising through radio has somewhat lost its charm because of the introduction of new mediums. Still, a sizeable number of small scale advertisers promote therir products via the radio frequency. Online advertising is becoming the most used form of advertisment as it can carry a vast number of advertisers at a given time Covert Advertising � Advertising in Movies This is a very unique type of advertisement form which includes the promotion of brands whether subtly or evidently, in television shows, movies, etc. A popular example of covert advertising is the use of branded Nokia phone by Tom Cruise in the movie Minority Report. Surrogate Advertising � Advertising Indirectly Surrogate advertisement is used when the promotion of certain products is prohibited by law. This fairly includes the advertisement of cigaratte and alcohol which are injurious to health. The advertisers, therefore, promote other brands of the same name or other products of the same brand, if exists, so as to remind the consumer of the prohibited product. The famous companies which use surrogate advertising are Kingfisher and Foster. Public Service Advertising � Advertising for Social Causes Public service advertisement holds the purpose of conveying social welfare messages to the viewers. Creating awareness of AIDS, political integrity, poverty alleviation, illiteracy, energy conservation, etc are the examples of public service advertisement Celebrity Advertising This form of advertising backs the support of a celebrity who is assigned as a brand ambassador. Because people tend to follow tips given by their favourite celebs, this form of advertisement has gained nuch popularity. These celebrities can be involved in advertising either through broadcast or print media.
